In a significant diplomatic development, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met face-to-face in Busan, South Korea, marking their first interaction in nearly six years. The meeting comes after years of tensions between the two nations over trade disputes and global influence.
During the talks, President Trump heaped praise on his Chinese counterpart, describing Xi as a “distinguished and respected leader.” He said, “It’s an honor to meet my friend Xi Jinping. We have already agreed on many things and will continue to find common ground. President Xi is a good leader of a great nation, and I believe our excellent relationship will continue.” The two leaders had last met during the 2019 G20 Summit in Japan.
President Xi, in his remarks, expressed delight at reconnecting with Trump after several years, noting that relations between China and the U.S. had remained stable under their guidance. He said he was prepared to work with Trump to enhance bilateral relations, adding that “occasional friction between major economies is natural.”
Xi also lauded Trump’s efforts toward promoting global peace, particularly his role in facilitating the recent ceasefire in Gaza. Highlighting the multiple challenges the world faces today, Xi emphasized that major powers like China and the United States must work together for the collective good. He also discussed the ongoing trade negotiations between the two countries, signaling a renewed phase of cooperation between Washington and Beijing.
