Tomato Prices Soar Amid Heavy Rainfall in Two States

The recent downpours across two states have led to a dramatic spike in vegetable prices, particularly tomatoes, which have  left consumers astounded. Just a month ago, tomatoes were priced between Rs 30 and Rs 40 per kilogram, but in a mere 15 days, these prices have tripled.

Current Market Rates
Currently, tomato prices range from Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kilogram. In the wholesale market, tomatoes are priced at ₹80 per kilogram, but by the time they reach retail outlets, consumers face prices between Rs 100 and Rs 120, according to vegetable traders.

 Consumer Concerns
Consumers are questioning the reasons behind this sudden increase in tomato prices. Traders attribute the surge to a shortfall in supply relative to demand.

Crop Damage and Supply Shortage
The recent heavy rains have caused significant damage to tomato crops, resulting in reduced supply and heightened market demand. Additionally, heavy rainfall in neighboring states has drastically decreased agricultural yields, further contributing to the price escalation. Typically, tomato prices tend to rise during the summer months; however, the current prices are notably higher than usual for this time of year.

Traders are expressing concern over potential losses if the high-priced goods do not sell. They anticipate that these elevated prices may continue for at least another month.
