Kolkata: A horrific gang rape incident at a law college in Kolkata has triggered massive public outrage and legal action, with a student leader from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) among the arrested. The assault took place inside the college’s union room, where a young woman was allegedly gang-raped by three individuals, including the TMC-affiliated student Manojit Mishra. The other two accused have been identified as Jaib Ahmad and Prameed.
The incident reportedly stemmed from persistent harassment by Manojit, who had been pressuring the victim to marry him. Upon her refusal, he allegedly conspired with his friends to commit the assault. Police investigations reveal the accused locked the security room and raped the victim through the night. They also assaulted her with a hockey stick when she attempted to escape and filmed the entire episode, threatening to leak the videos on social media if she reported the crime.
All three accused were produced before court on Thursday and have been remanded to five-day police custody. The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the case. Public protests have erupted across Kolkata, with demonstrators demanding the death penalty for the accused. The case continues to draw nationwide attention due to the involvement of a ruling party student leader.
