In a move to modernize the public distribution system, the Telangana Civil Supplies Department is set to introduce Smart Ration Cards embedded with QR codes. The department is currently evaluating various designs and has set March 25 as the deadline for bid submissions.
Over 18 Lakh Applications Received
Telangana currently has 90 lakh ration cards, and with the launch of the Congress-led Praja Palana scheme, the state has received over 18 lakh new applications. The government initially aimed to distribute the new ration cards from March 1 and March 8 in districts without the election code. However, the decision to issue Smart Cards caused a delay in the distribution process. The department confirmed that verification in several districts has been completed, and existing cardholders will also receive Smart Ration Cards.
March 25 Deadline for Tender Submissions
The department has invited tenders, with March 25 as the final deadline. A pre-bid meeting is scheduled for March 17. The ration cards will be issued in the name of the woman head of the family, whose photo will be featured on the Smart Card. By scanning the QR code at the ration shop, details of all eligible family members will be displayed. This system is already operational in states like Rajasthan, Karnataka, Haryana, and Gujarat.
