Hyderabad: September 17 marks the historic day in 1948 when Hyderabad was liberated from the Nizam’s rule and officially integrated into India. Over the years, the date has gained significant political weight in Telangana, with different parties framing it either as a day of “liberation” or “merger” to suit their narratives.
This year, the Congress government has declared September 17 as People’s Governance Day, issuing a circular directing district in-charge ministers to hoist the national flag across all districts. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is scheduled to participate in flag-hoisting ceremonies in Hyderabad, while Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka will lead the observance in Khammam.

Previously, under the BRS government, September 17 was celebrated as National Unity Day, and similar events are expected this year. The central government is also participating in Telangana Liberation Day observances. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Hyderabad and was welcomed at Begumpet Airport by MP Raghunandan Rao. Singh is slated to attend the main events tomorrow.
Political parties including Congress, BJP, BRS, and CPI have made arrangements across the state to conduct celebrations. Observers note that the September 17 events have increasingly become politically charged, with parties emphasizing narratives aligned with their respective agendas.
