A person of Indian origin from the Telugu community has achieved a rare milestone in British politics. Uday Nagaraju, a native of Telangana, has been inducted as a Life Peer in the UK House of Lords, the upper chamber of the British Parliament. In a historic moment, he took oath on Wednesday holding the Bhagavad Gita, and will henceforth be officially known as Lord Nagaraju of Bloomsbury.
The peerage was conferred by Britain’s King Charles III on the recommendation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. With this appointment, Uday Nagaraju has become the youngest member to join the House of Lords. The Life Peerage is awarded to individuals for exceptional contributions to governance, education and social innovation, granting them lifelong membership with a role in law-making and oversight of the government.

Uday Nagaraju was born in Shanigaram village of Koheda mandal in Siddipet district, Telangana, to Hanumantha Rao and Nirmala Devi. He completed his early education in Warangal and Hyderabad, pursued engineering studies in Maharashtra, obtained an IT degree from Oxford Brookes University, and later earned a postgraduate qualification in public policy from University College London.
An AI policy expert and public intellectual, Uday Nagaraju founded the think tank AI Policy Labs to study the impact of Artificial Intelligence on society and governance. He is an internationally recognised speaker and author, and has been actively engaged in British politics for over a decade, working closely with communities and public institutions, earning recognition for his grassroots-level engagement and policy-focused approach.
