TCS Mandates 225 Billed Days Per Year, Limits Bench Time to 35 Days

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of India’s largest IT services firms, has implemented a new workforce policy requiring each employee to complete a minimum of 225 billed business days annually. This policy, effective from June 12, is aimed at maximizing workforce efficiency and reducing unproductive time across the organization.

Under the new rule, the maximum allowable bench period—the time an employee is not assigned to any billable project—has been capped at 35 days per year. TCS stated in its policy document that this move is designed to optimize resource utilization and limit idle time, which can negatively impact employee compensation, career progression, and job engagement. The Resource Management Group (RMG), led globally by Chandrasekharan Ramkumar, is responsible for aligning employee skillsets with appropriate projects as part of this strategic change.
