Following a decisive victory in Bangladesh’s 13th general elections, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman is set to assume office as the country’s new Prime Minister. After nearly 17 years abroad, Rahman will return to Bangladesh and take the oath at the Parliament House’s “Sadarang Plaza” in Dhaka on Tuesday, February 17.
The Bangladesh government has officially invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Representatives from 13 countries, including China, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, have also been invited. However, due to prior commitments—such as meetings with the French President in Mumbai and the AI Summit in Delhi—PM Modi’s attendance remains uncertain. Analysts suggest that India may send a senior ministerial delegation if Modi is unable to attend.

Despite some recent tensions between India and Bangladesh, PM Modi personally called Tarique Rahman to congratulate him on the election victory. Rahman described the gesture as a positive step, expressing optimism that his government would maintain constructive relations with India based on mutual respect and cooperation.
Tarique Rahman emphasized that the government’s foremost priority will be Bangladesh’s national interest. While fostering international partnerships remains important, he noted that all policies and initiatives would be guided primarily by the welfare and development of the nation and its citizens.
