Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as a pivotal figure in West Bengal politics, significantly altering the state’s political landscape by challenging the long-standing dominance of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. His strategic political moves and electoral successes have positioned him as one of the key architects behind the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) growing influence in the state.

Born on December 15, 1970, in Karkuli village of Purba Medinipur district, Suvendu Adhikari hails from a prominent political family. He is the son of Sisir Adhikari and Gayatri Adhikari. He completed his higher education at Rabindra Bharati University. Coming from an influential political background, his family has maintained a strong foothold in Purba Medinipur, with a history of affiliations transitioning from the Congress to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and later to the BJP.

Suvendu Adhikari began his political career in 1995 with the Congress party as a councillor of the Contai Municipality. Following the formation of the TMC by Mamata Banerjee in 1998, he joined the party along with his father. He gradually rose through the party ranks and played a crucial role in the historic Nandigram anti-land acquisition movement, which became a turning point in West Bengal politics and contributed significantly to the TMC’s rise to power in 2011.

He was elected as an MLA in 2006 and later served as Member of Parliament from Tamluk constituency in 2009 and 2014. In 2016, he won the Nandigram Assembly seat and was inducted into the state cabinet, handling key portfolios including Transport and Irrigation. However, internal political differences within the TMC, particularly regarding the growing influence of Abhishek Banerjee, led to mounting dissatisfaction.

In December 2020, Suvendu Adhikari resigned from the TMC and his ministerial post, citing ideological differences and concerns over dynastic politics, and subsequently joined the BJP. In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, he created a major political upset by defeating Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram constituency with a margin of 1,956 votes.

Further consolidating his political stature, Suvendu Adhikari contested from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the 2026 elections. He secured victories in both constituencies, including a significant win over Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by over 15,000 votes, reinforcing his position as a major political force and establishing himself as one of the most influential leaders in contemporary West Bengal politics.
