The appointment of Karki followed several rounds of discussions among key stakeholders. Ashok Raj Sigdel, the Army Chief, and Ram Chandra Paudel, the President of Nepal, jointly decided to appoint her as the head of the interim government after holding multiple consultations with Gen-Z movement leaders. Her selection is said to have been made with the unanimous agreement of all major parties and protest leaders to stabilize the political situation.

Sushila Karki, aged 72, was born on June 7, 1952, in Biratnagar. She became the first woman to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal and was known for her integrity and firm stance against corruption, delivering tough verdicts in several high-profile cases. Despite facing an impeachment motion initiated by former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli, she retained her position with public support and judicial intervention. Her reputation for honesty and impartiality reportedly played a key role in her selection as interim Prime Minister.
