New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard arguments on the bail cancellation plea in the murder case of former Andhra Pradesh minister YS Vivekananda Reddy. The bench, comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and N.K. Singh, listened to submissions from MP Avinash Reddy seeking the cancellation of bail, and lawyer Siddharth Luthra, representing Viveka’s daughter Sunitha. Luthra stressed the need for further investigation, noting that the principal perpetrators and key actors had not yet been fully identified, and raised concerns over witness intimidation and evidence tampering.
During the proceedings, the court quashed cases filed against Sunitha Reddy, her husband Narreddy Rajashekhar Reddy, and former CBI officer Ram Singh, observing that these cases had been registered with malicious intent. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the CBI, emphasized that while indefinite incarceration is generally not advisable, the severity of the murder and tampering with evidence justified extended custody. The bench also heard submissions from senior advocate Huzaifa Ahmadi on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh government, highlighting attempts by suspects to influence witnesses and obstruct the investigation.
The Supreme Court directed the CBI to clarify whether further investigation was necessary, which suspects required custodial interrogation, and whose bail should be canceled. The bench expressed concern over misuse of the legal process in filing cases against Viveka’s family members. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for September 9, 2025.
