New Delhi: The Supreme Court has praised Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, acknowledging him as a genuine farmer with no political agenda, solely committed to the welfare of the farming community. The court directed the Punjab and Haryana governments to submit a detailed report on the indefinite protest.
Dallewal, who had been leading an indefinite protest to push for farmers’ demands, ended his strike on Friday after the Punjab government assured to fulfill its commitments. Punjab officials informed the Supreme Court that the protest sites at Khanauri and Shambu borders had been cleared and roads reopened.

Recognizing Dallewal’s dedication, the court emphasized that his actions were solely for the benefit of farmers. It instructed the Punjab and Haryana governments to provide a ground report on the prevailing situation. A high-level committee, led by a former High Court judge, has been tasked with reviewing farmers’ grievances and submitting reports accordingly.
The Supreme Court also lifted contempt proceedings against the Punjab Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, which had been imposed for failing to provide medical aid to Dallewal as per an earlier court directive.
