Khartoum/Kabul: In a span of two days, devastating natural disasters have left a trail of destruction in Afghanistan and Sudan. On Sunday, a powerful earthquake struck Afghanistan, killing nearly 800 people and leaving many missing.

Meanwhile, in Sudan’s Marrah mountain region, relentless rains triggered a massive landslide that buried an entire village, killing over 1,000 people. Authorities confirmed that only one survivor was pulled from the rubble. Most victims were displaced families who had fled the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Homes and families were crushed under boulders rolling down the mountains.

The Sudanese government has appealed to the United Nations and international humanitarian agencies for assistance in recovering bodies and providing relief. Women and children were among the dead, adding to the country’s deepening humanitarian crisis. With millions already displaced by civil war, Sudan faces widespread hunger, lack of medical facilities, and now the compounded impact of this disaster.
