Russia experienced a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region, with the US Geological Survey (USGS) reporting the epicenter at a depth of 10 km. The tremor was followed by aftershocks measuring 5.8, prompting Russian authorities to issue tsunami warnings.
Around the same time, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Central Papua province in Indonesia, with its epicenter located 28 km underground, according to the USGS. While no significant damage or casualties have been reported in either Russia or Indonesia so far, the back-to-back quakes triggered panic among residents, and authorities are continuing to assess the situation.
