Sri Lanka is facing a major humanitarian disaster after sudden floods triggered by Cyclone Ditva caused massive destruction across several regions. Official figures confirm that 132 people have lost their lives in the floods, while another 130 individuals are still missing. Rescue teams are continuing large-scale relief operations in severely affected districts.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has formally declared a state of emergency to fast-track relief measures and protect citizens in danger zones. Thousands of residents in flood-hit areas are stranded without basic necessities, with emergency response units evacuating people to safer shelters as water levels remain dangerously high.

India has extended strong support to Sri Lanka in its hour of crisis. Under Operation Sagar Bandhu, India has dispatched 21 tonnes of humanitarian aid including food items, medical supplies and daily essentials. This comes in addition to 6 tonnes of emergency materials sent earlier.

Relief consignments are being transported using Indian naval vessels INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri, carrying large quantities of essential goods. With a total of 27 tonnes of humanitarian assistance already delivered, India has assured that more supplies will be sent to support ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts in Sri Lanka.
