Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to chair a crucial Union Cabinet meeting on Thursday, triggering intense political speculation across the country over a possible Cabinet reshuffle. Though officially described as a routine review meeting, reports indicate that the Centre may take key decisions regarding the reorganization of the Union Cabinet. Sources suggest that ministers are being assessed based on their performance, conduct, and public image, with discussions underway on dropping several underperforming or controversial faces from the government. Political circles are abuzz with claims that this could be the final Cabinet meeting for more than 25 ministers.
The meeting has gained added significance as all 72 members of the Modi government — including 30 Cabinet ministers, 36 Ministers of State, and five ministers with independent charge — are expected to participate together for the first time this year. Apart from political considerations, the meeting will reportedly focus on India’s development priorities and emerging global challenges. Prime Minister Modi is expected to review the achievements of various ministries over the last two years and assess the implementation of key welfare schemes introduced by the Centre.
Senior officials and ministers from over a dozen important ministries are also scheduled to deliver special presentations on departmental performance, policy achievements, and future plans. Discussions are likely to include the Centre’s roadmap for upcoming reforms and strategies to accelerate economic growth. Particular attention is expected to be given to the impact of tensions in West Asia and ongoing international crises on India’s economy. The Prime Minister is likely to advise ministers on measures aimed at reducing the financial burden on citizens while maintaining economic stability.
Political observers believe the BJP’s recent electoral gains in West Bengal and Odisha, along with the NDA alliance returning to power in Puducherry, could influence the timing and structure of the anticipated Cabinet expansion. Analysts say the leadership may use the reshuffle to reward strong performers, strengthen regional representation, and induct new faces ahead of upcoming political challenges. As a result, the meeting is being viewed as a significant political exercise beyond a routine administrative review.
Meanwhile, attention in Telangana has intensified following the registration of a POCSO case against Bandi Bhagirath, son of Union Minister Bandi Sanjay. Bhagirath is currently in judicial remand, while BJP leader Bandi Sanjay Kumar has also come under criticism amid allegations that the victim’s family was pressured in an attempt to prevent Bhagirath from going to jail. The controversy has led to demands from opposition parties and activists seeking Bandi Sanjay’s removal from the Union Cabinet. Against this backdrop, political suspense continues over whether Bandi Sanjay and Kishan Reddy will retain their positions in the expected Cabinet reshuffle.
