Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has approached Kolkata Cyber Police, filing a complaint against an individual for spreading false and defamatory content about him on social media. Ganguly alleged that Uttam Saha, president of the Argentina Football Fan Club, made baseless remarks that damaged his reputation. The complaint was submitted on Thursday, highlighting the mental distress caused by these false claims.
Ganguly sent the complaint via email to the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar, emphasizing that the statements were deliberate attempts to tarnish his decades-long reputation as a national and international sportsperson and administrator. He expressed concern over the impact of such misinformation on his personal and professional standing.
The complaint comes in the aftermath of a chaotic event held on December 13 at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, where football star Lionel Messi participated. The program turned disorderly, with fans causing extensive damage to stadium furniture. Following the incident, the West Bengal government formed an inquiry committee, the event organizer Shatadru Datta was arrested, and Sports Minister Arup Biswas resigned from his post.
Amid the controversy, social media posts falsely linked Ganguly to the event organizer, prompting him to approach the authorities. The Kolkata Cyber Cell has accepted the complaint and will conduct a thorough investigation, ensuring legal action is taken in accordance with the law.
