In a shocking revelation from Sudan, international media reports have surfaced detailing that soldiers are sexually assaulting women in exchange for food amidst the ongoing civil war. The conflict, particularly severe in the town of Omdurman, has forced numerous families to flee, leaving 24 women and their families stranded and dependent on the army for basic necessities.
Due to the civil war that began in April 2024, the security forces have stored food supplies in local factories. Reports indicate that soldiers are exploiting women who come to seek provisions for their elderly parents and children. These women have been compelled to comply with the soldiers’ demands to access the leftover belongings in abandoned houses.
One woman, speaking to the media, disclosed the harrowing circumstances: “Don’t let such a situation happen to anyone. I had to do what they told me to do to satisfy my children’s hunger.” In some cases, soldiers have forcibly taken women to deserted houses, making them stand in line to be selected by the soldiers. A particularly disturbing incident involved a 21-year-old woman whose legs were set on fire for not complying with the soldiers’ demands.
This grim situation has attracted global attention. The civil war, which erupted in April 2024, is a result of clashes between the Army and the Rapid Support Force. Women caught in the crossfire are increasingly at risk of sexual harassment from both factions, adding to the tragedy of the ongoing conflict.
