A fresh outbreak of Shigella infection has been reported in Kerala, triggering concern among residents of Kozhikode district. The infection has surfaced in the Eranjikkal area, where at least 12 people have recently tested positive. Earlier, four cases were identified, including the death of a child. Officials noted that most of the new cases are among family members of those previously infected, indicating local transmission.
Health authorities have warned that the disease is spreading rapidly and have initiated containment measures. Local panchayat staff and medical teams have been deployed to the affected area, conducting door-to-door surveys to identify suspected cases and prevent further spread. The state health department has urged the public to remain alert and follow precautionary measures.
Shigella is a bacterial infection that causes severe intestinal illness, with symptoms including diarrhea with blood or mucus, abdominal pain, and fever. It spreads through contaminated food and water, as well as through contact with infected individuals. Doctors stress that maintaining hygiene—such as washing hands thoroughly, consuming boiled water, and avoiding contaminated food—is essential to curb the outbreak.
