Washington: A powerful winter storm, named Fern, is sweeping across the United States, bringing normal life to a standstill in large parts of the country. The storm, stretching from southern states to the Northeast, has left nearly one million homes and businesses without electricity, as heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures damaged power infrastructure.

The worst-hit states include Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Georgia. Tennessee alone reported power outages affecting more than 300,000 residents. With electricity grids under severe strain, the US Department of Energy issued emergency directives. Weather authorities warned that the intense cold spell could persist through the end of January.

Air Travel Disrupted; Thousands of Flights Cancelled

The storm has caused widespread disruption to air travel. Approximately 18,000 flights have been cancelled, while another 30,000 have been delayed. Several major airports, including Washington Reagan National Airport, were forced to shut down. Snow-covered highways also led to dangerous driving conditions, with police confirming over 300 road accidents.

Deaths Reported as Temperatures Plunge

Fatalities linked to extreme cold have been reported in Texas, Louisiana, and New York City. New York’s Central Park recorded nearly nine inches of snowfall, while Pittsburgh experienced its heaviest snow in 15 years. Authorities have established warming centers across affected regions and are relocating vulnerable residents to safer shelters.

Educational institutions, courts, and government offices remain closed in multiple areas. Universities in Philadelphia, Boston, Nashville, New York, and Dallas announced closures through Monday or Tuesday. Meteorological officials stated the storm system spans nearly 2,000 miles from New Mexico to Maine. Although snowfall has eased in some locations, dangerous cold conditions are expected to continue.

Residents Find Moments of Relief Amid Harsh Conditions

Despite the severe weather, residents in some regions are making the most of the snowfall. In cities such as Oklahoma City, people were seen enjoying outdoor activities, with families and children playing in the snow.
