Even before the onset of summer, residents of Telangana are beginning to face drinking water shortages, with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) announcing a major supply disruption in the city. The Water Board has decided to undertake emergency repairs on the Manjeera Phase-2 pipeline, one of Hyderabad’s primary drinking water sources, leading to a complete suspension of water supply in several key localities from Wednesday to Thursday night.
Officials said multiple leakages were detected in the 1,500-mm diameter pumping main pipeline that supplies water to the city. Severe water loss has been reported along the Patancheru–Hydernagar stretch and between Kalabgur and Patancheru, causing a drop in pressure and preventing water from reaching tail-end areas. With the summer season approaching, the Board has taken up the repair works on a war footing to ensure a long-term solution to the problem.
According to HMWSSB, water supply will remain suspended for around 40 hours, from 6:00 am on February 11 to 10:00 pm on Thursday, February 12. Officials explained that pumping must be stopped during this period to facilitate welding and other technical works on the pipeline. Water supply is expected to resume from midnight on Thursday once the repairs are completed.
The affected areas include Division 17 localities such as Ramachandrapuram, Ashok Nagar, Jyothi Nagar, Lingampally, Chandanagar, Gangaram, Madinaguda and Miyapur; Division 22 areas including Beeramguda, Ameenpur and Bhagyanagar Colony; Division 6 areas such as Erragadda, SR Nagar and Ameerpet; and Division 9 localities including KPHB Colony, Kukatpally and Pragathi Nagar. Officials have advised residents in these areas to store adequate water and remain cautious during the disruption period.
