Andhra Pradesh is witnessing a rise in scrub typhus cases, raising public concern. Srikakulam district has been particularly affected, with 34 new cases reported recently. Scrub typhus, transmitted through mites, often begins with mild fever-like symptoms, causing many patients to overlook it. However, delayed treatment can result in severe complications and even be life-threatening.
According to the state Health Department, from January to December this year, 6,678 people were tested for the disease across Andhra Pradesh, of which 1,317 tested positive. These figures highlight the growing prevalence of the infection in the state.
Symptoms to Watch For
Scrub typhus symptoms resemble malaria, dengue, and typhoid, often leading to misdiagnosis. Key warning signs include:
* Persistent fever
* Dark spots or rashes on the body
* Fatigue and weakness
* A characteristic black scab (eschar) on the skin
Failure to recognize the eschar can result in rapid disease progression and potentially coma. Untreated cases may have a mortality rate of 6% to 30%, but timely administration of antibiotics reduces this to around 2%.
High-Risk Period and Vulnerable Groups
The disease is most prevalent from August to mid-February, when humid conditions and mite-prone areas like fields, bushes, and animal shelters increase exposure. Agricultural workers, cattle herders, and children who spend significant time outdoors are particularly vulnerable. Experts note that rural areas in Srikakulam and increased outdoor activity during the harvest season contribute to the rise in cases.
Preventive Measures
Health authorities recommend the following precautions:
* Wear long-sleeved clothing, pants, socks, and boots
* Maintain cleanliness in homes, yards, and animal shelters
* Remove garbage and debris from living areas
* Ensure children wear full-coverage clothing when playing outdoors
Persistent fever, skin rashes, or dark spots should prompt immediate medical testing. Early detection and timely treatment are key to controlling scrub typhus effectively
