In a landmark verdict in the custodial deaths case that shocked the nation, a special court in Madurai has sentenced nine policemen to death for the brutal killing of a father and son in Sathankulam, Tamil Nadu, during the COVID-19 lockdown. The court came down heavily on the accused, condemning their inhuman conduct and stating that their actions had shaken the very conscience of society.
The incident dates back to June 19, 2020, when Jayaraj and his son Bennix, residents of Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district, were arrested for allegedly keeping their mobile shop open beyond permitted hours during lockdown restrictions. According to the investigation, the duo was subjected to severe custodial torture at the police station, where they were brutally beaten with sticks and iron rods. They were later shifted to Kovilpatti sub-jail, where both succumbed to their injuries.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the probe following nationwide outrage, submitted compelling evidence establishing custodial torture. The court observed that the accused policemen attempted to destroy evidence and fabricate records to cover up the crime and mislead the investigation. Those sentenced to death include Inspector Sridhar, Sub-Inspectors Raghu Ganesh and Balakrishnan, along with Murugan, Muthuraj, Chelladurai, Thomas Francis, Samudurai, and Veyil Muthu. The court also imposed a fine of ₹15 lakh on the prime accused.
The case had sparked widespread protests across the country, with civil society groups, political leaders, and film personalities demanding justice for the victims. The verdict, delivered after four years, is being seen as a significant step towards ensuring accountability within the police system. The victims’ families welcomed the judgment, stating that justice has finally been served and expressing hope that such incidents will not be repeated.
