Former Congress president and MP Sonia Gandhi has been served notices by the Rouse Avenue Sessions Court in Delhi in connection with allegations of obtaining voting rights before acquiring Indian citizenship. A petition filed recently claimed that Gandhi was included in the voters list in 1980, while she officially received Indian citizenship only in 1983. The petitioner alleged that she used forged documents to secure voter registration and sought that a case be registered against her.
The court has directed Sonia Gandhi to respond to the allegations and has also issued notices to the Delhi Police seeking an explanation. The petition was originally filed by Delhi-based lawyer Vikas Tripathi in the Rouse Avenue Magistrate Court. Although the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia dismissed the petition in September 2025 citing lack of substantial evidence, Tripathi later filed a revision petition challenging that order before the Sessions Court.
On Tuesday, Special Judge Vishal Gogne heard the matter and ordered issuance of notices to Sonia Gandhi and the Delhi Police, directing them to submit clarifications. The timing of the notice has gained attention as it coincides closely with Sonia Gandhi’s birthday on December 9.
