In a significant development in Indian cricket, skipper Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket. The 38-year-old made the announcement via social media, marking the end of his red-ball career ahead of the upcoming England tour.
Rohit represented India in 67 Test matches, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 45. In his Test career, he registered 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, with a career-best score of 212.
The announcement comes amid strong indications that the national selectors are preparing to appoint a new captain for the Test series in England, scheduled to begin next month. Sources close to the BCCI revealed that the selectors had held multiple rounds of discussions in recent weeks regarding Rohit’s Test future. A meeting held in Mumbai on Tuesday reportedly finalised the decision to move forward with a younger leader for the new World Test Championship cycle.

Rohit, who had earlier stepped away from T20 internationals, will now continue to represent India only in the ODI format. The selection committee, citing concerns over his red-ball form and leadership continuity, is understood to have communicated their intent to explore fresh leadership options in the Test setup.
A BCCI selection committee member, speaking to the media on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Rohit will no longer be leading the Test side. The official announcement regarding the new Test captain is expected in the coming days.
