Amsterdam: Rob Jetten, the 38-year-old leader of the centrist D66 party, is set to become the next Prime Minister of the Netherlands following his party’s victory in the recent general elections. The D66 defeated the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) led by Geert Wilders, known for his anti-Islam and anti-immigration rhetoric.
Jetten described the election results as historic, stating that the Dutch people had placed great trust in his leadership. Notably, Jetten is openly gay and has spoken candidly about his identity, making his rise a landmark moment in Dutch politics. He has been engaged for three years to Argentine hockey player Nicolás Keenan, with the couple planning to marry in Spain next year.
Born in Uden, Netherlands, Jetten studied public administration at Radboud University in Nijmegen. The son of two schoolteachers, he was passionate about sports from a young age and initially considered a career in athletics or business before entering politics. Political analysts noted that Wilders’ popularity declined significantly during this election, as voters favored Jetten’s centrist and progressive approach over divisive campaign themes.
