Following the arrest of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, US President Donald Trump has reportedly intensified his focus on Greenland, stepping up efforts to bring the island under US control. Several international media reports claim that Trump’s camp explored unconventional measures, including financial incentives, to persuade Greenlanders to support separation from Denmark and integration with the United States.
According to these reports, officials linked to Trump’s administration discussed the possibility of offering direct cash payments to Greenland’s residents. Proposed amounts reportedly ranged from USD 10,000 to USD 100,000 per person. With Greenland’s population estimated at around 57,000, the discussions are said to be at a preliminary stage, and no formal decision has been taken on implementing such a plan.
Greenland’s leadership is reported to have rejected the proposal outright. Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that the future of Greenland cannot be determined by foreign countries. At the same time, concerns have reportedly been raised by NATO member nations over the implications of such plans on regional stability and international relations.
Meanwhile, Trump has made controversial remarks regarding international law. In an interview, he reportedly said that his personal moral judgment is the only limit on his authority to order military actions globally, adding that international laws do not constrain him and claiming that he cannot remain silent when people are suffering.
