New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced plans to issue new Rs 100 and Rs 200 currency notes under the Mahatma Gandhi series. The central bank confirmed that the new notes will bear the signature of RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra.

Despite the introduction of the new series, the existing Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes will continue to remain legal tender. The move comes after Sanjay Malhotra assumed office as the 26th Governor of the RBI, succeeding Shaktikanta Das. Malhotra, a 1990-batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, has been appointed for a three-year term.

In recent years, the RBI has introduced new ₹500 notes while discontinuing the Rs 1,000 denomination. The central bank had earlier announced plans to issue redesigned ₹50 notes as part of its currency modernization efforts.

The upcoming Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes will feature advanced security enhancements to prevent counterfeiting. The RBI emphasized that these measures will make duplication more difficult, strengthening the security framework of the Indian currency system.

The central bank has been consistently upgrading security features in currency notes, with previous modifications to the ₹500 denomination helping to curb the circulation of counterfeit notes. The latest initiative reflects the RBI’s ongoing efforts to enhance the integrity of lower-denomination currency in the financial system.
