Director Ram Gopal Varma has been sentenced to three months of simple imprisonment in connection with a cheque bounce case. The Andheri Magistrate Court in Mumbai delivered the verdict, declaring Varma guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. In addition to the jail term, the court imposed a fine, ordering Varma to pay Rs 3.72 lakh as compensation to the complainant within three months. Failure to comply would result in an additional three months of imprisonment.

The case, filed in 2018 by a company on behalf of Maheshchandra Mishra, involved a cheque issued by Varma’s production house that reportedly bounced. Despite the ongoing trial for the past seven years, Varma failed to appear in court, leading to the issuance of a non-bailable warrant against him.
The court noted that the offense falls under the ambit of the Negotiable Instruments Act and has initiated legal action accordingly.
Career Setback and New Announcements
Once celebrated for iconic films such as Shiva, Satya, Rangeela, Company, and Sarkar, Varma’s career trajectory has seen a decline in recent years. Reflecting on his choices, the director recently expressed regret over his recent film projects and announced plans to focus on high-quality films.
As part of this new approach, Varma has revealed his upcoming project, Syndicate, which carries the tagline, “Only man can be the most terrifying animal.” The filmmaker plans to cast major stars for this venture, signaling a fresh start in his filmmaking journey.
