Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that passengers carrying luggage beyond the prescribed free limit will be required to pay additional charges, as the government plans to strictly enforce luggage rules in trains similar to those in air travel. The announcement came in a written reply to a question raised by Telugu Desam Party MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The minister emphasized that passengers must book excess luggage in advance at station luggage offices to avoid penalties.
Vaishnaw outlined the class-wise free baggage limits for train travel. AC First Class passengers are allowed up to 70 kg free, with a maximum of 150 kg permitted on payment of charges. AC 2-Tier allows 50 kg free, with a maximum of 100 kg. AC 3-Tier and Chair Car passengers have a free limit of 40 kg, with no additional allowance, while Sleeper Class permits 40 kg free, with a maximum of 80 kg. Second Class (General) passengers can carry 35 kg free, with a maximum of 70 kg.

The minister warned that passengers who fail to book excess luggage in advance and are found carrying it during inspection by the TTE will be liable to pay fines six times higher than the normal charges. He highlighted that the strict enforcement is aimed at ensuring the comfort of all passengers and avoiding inconvenience, particularly during festival seasons and peak travel periods.
To support this initiative, the Railways has begun installing electronic luggage weighing machines at major stations across the country. Vaishnaw noted that the move is part of broader efforts to streamline railway operations and maintain discipline in baggage management, while ensuring safety and convenience for travelers.
