Hyderabad: Indian Railways is transforming major railway stations into smart, passenger-friendly hubs by introducing digital lounges and co-working spaces, enabling travelers to use their waiting time productively. Under the initiative, passengers will be able to carry out office work at designated workstations within stations if there is sufficient time before their train’s arrival, eliminating the need to abandon professional commitments while traveling.
As part of the nationwide station modernisation programme, Secunderabad Railway Station is being redeveloped at an estimated cost of about ₹750 crore, with over 60 percent of the works already completed. The proposed facilities include digital lounges and co-working spaces designed to integrate technology and comfort, catering especially to software professionals, businesspersons, and students. Railway officials said the move aims not only to improve passenger amenities but also to help travellers make effective use of their time while waiting for trains or during layovers between connecting services.
The co-working spaces are expected to be equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, charging points, printing and scanning services, video conferencing facilities, air-conditioned silent work pods, office-style desks and chairs, as well as tea and coffee counters, modern washrooms, and food options. The project is likely to be implemented under a public-private partnership model, generating additional revenue for the Railways. At Mumbai Central Railway Station, a similar digital lounge operates from 7 am to 11 pm, charging ₹200 for the first hour and ₹150 for each additional hour. Railway officials said charges at Secunderabad will be finalised based on the facilities provided.
