New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has questioned the central government over its response to the 26% tariffs imposed on India by former US President Donald Trump. Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, he demanded clarity on the Centre’s measures to address the impact of these trade restrictions on the Indian economy.
Gandhi also raised concerns over China’s territorial encroachment, alleging that the country has occupied over 4,000 kilometers of Indian land. Citing diplomatic sources, he claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu had sent a letter to China regarding the issue. “The government must take concrete steps to reclaim this land,” he asserted.

Responding to Gandhi’s remarks, BJP MP Anurag Thakur countered that the opposition should refrain from politicizing national security matters. “Everyone knows under whose tenure China encroached upon Indian territory. During the Doklam standoff, who was seen sharing a meal with Chinese officials? Such political rhetoric will not yield any results,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Trump had previously defended the tariffs, arguing that the US was imposing lower duties compared to other nations. He noted that while India levies an average of 52% tariffs on American goods, the US had imposed a 26% tariff despite considering India a key trade partner.
