With the Assam Assembly elections scheduled later this year, a tough contest is expected between the BJP and Congress. In a strategic move, Congress has appointed senior leader Priyanka Gandhi as chairperson of the party’s screening committee for the state. The decision was formalised through official orders issued by AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal.
The committee also includes Lok Sabha MPs Imran Masood, Saptagiri Shankar Ulaka, and Sirivella Prasad as members. It will be responsible for deciding party tickets and conducting internal consultations ahead of the elections. Similar screening committees have reportedly been established in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, where state elections are also scheduled, indicating Congress’s wider preparation for upcoming polls.
