New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has nominated four eminent individuals to the Rajya Sabha, recognizing their contributions in various fields such as law, diplomacy, education, and social service. The official announcement was made by the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday.
The nominated members are:
Ujjwal Nikam: A high-profile public prosecutor known for handling major criminal cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. He has played a crucial role in several landmark convictions in Indian judicial history.
Harsh Vardhan Shringla: Former Foreign Secretary of India and a veteran diplomat. He also served as the Chief Coordinator for India’s G20 presidency in 2023 and has held several key diplomatic positions, including India’s ambassador to the US.
Dr. Meenakshi Jain: A noted historian and academician who was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020. She has served as a member of the Indian Council of Historical Research and is known for her scholarly work in Indian history.
C. Sadanandan Master: A teacher and social worker from Kerala who lost both legs in an incident of political violence. He is widely respected for his continued service to education and social upliftment despite personal challenges.
As per Article 80 of the Indian Constitution, the President has the authority to nominate 12 members to the Rajya Sabha for their contributions in the fields of art, literature, science, and social service. These nominations fill upcoming vacancies in the Upper House.
