Power Struggle Intensifies in Iran as IRGC Expands Control

Significant political upheaval is being reported in Iran, with a growing power struggle between President Masoud Pezeshkian and the influential Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). International reports suggest that the IRGC has begun informally assuming control over key governance functions, amid criticism of the President’s handling of the ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, as well as the country’s deepening economic crisis.

The IRGC leadership has reportedly accused the civilian government of failing to take decisive action during wartime conditions. As a result, military authorities are said to be directly intervening in administrative and security matters. This shift has raised concerns among observers that the balance of power within Iran is tilting heavily toward the military establishment.

Tensions have further escalated over key appointments within the government. A major flashpoint has been the selection of the intelligence minister, where candidates proposed by President Pezeshkian were reportedly rejected by the IRGC. The corps, under the leadership of Ahmad Vahidi, is believed to have asserted control over sensitive positions, signaling its expanding influence in governance.

Adding to the uncertainty is the unclear status of Mojtaba Khamenei, who is being viewed as the new Supreme Leader but has not appeared publicly. Reports indicate that critical government communications may not be reaching him, allegedly due to IRGC interference. While the President has raised concerns over rising inflation and economic decline, the military leadership appears to be prioritizing strategic and defense-related decisions.

Experts warn that this internal power struggle could further destabilize Iran and increase its international isolation. With tensions already high with the United States and Israel, the consolidation of power by the IRGC may intensify geopolitical risks in the region. Analysts caution that continued erosion of civilian authority could have long-term implications for governance and stability in the Middle East.
