In his 112th episode of “Mann Ki Baat” on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the advancements in the handloom sector are primarily benefiting women. He noted a significant increase in the sales of handloom and khadi products across the country, which is creating new job opportunities.
Modi stated that the khadi village industry has, for the first time, surpassed ₹1.5 lakh crore in sales, with khadi sales having risen by 400%. He urged people to purchase khadi garments on August 7, National Handlooms Day. In Rohtak district of Haryana, over 250 women involved in handloom production are earning substantial incomes, with their lives transformed after joining a prominent self-help group. The training in advanced technology for handloom work has enabled them to produce bed covers, sarees, and dupattas, resulting in significant earnings.
Modi also highlighted the global recognition of handloom products such as Sambalpuri sarees from Odisha, Kani shawls from Kashmir, and Maheshwari sarees from Madhya Pradesh. He mentioned the “Pari” project, which aims to promote traditional arts.
