The coalition government of Andhra Pradesh has embarked on the prestigious reconstruction of Amaravati as the state capital. The foundation stone-laying ceremony for the development of new urban infrastructure is expected to take place soon. The state government has decided to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the event, with reports indicating that his visit is likely between April 15 and 20.

In the first phase, the state plans to invest Rs 64,721 crore in infrastructure development and basic amenities. Tenders worth Rs 37,702 crore have already been finalized. The government is formulating a mission-mode strategy to expedite the construction process. A state cabinet meeting scheduled for March 17 is expected to grant approval, following which agreement letters will be issued to the contractors. The construction work is set to commence immediately after the issuance of work orders.

It is noteworthy that Amaravati was declared the capital of Andhra Pradesh during Chandrababu’s tenure as Chief Minister in 2014. However, the construction was stalled after the YSR Congress Party came to power in 2019, with then-Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy proposing the concept of three capitals.

With the coalition government reclaiming power in 2024, Amaravati has been reinstated as the capital, and the long-pending construction activities have resumed.
