Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on the occasion of Navratri, emphasizing key reforms and economic initiatives, particularly the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
In his speech, Modi stated that from tomorrow, new GST reforms will come into effect, aiming to strengthen the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. “GST reforms are leaving more income in the hands of the poor and middle class. During festival seasons, these benefits reach everyone across the country. GST will also boost India’s growth rate,” he said.
He recalled the introduction of GST in 2017, calling it a “new chapter” in India’s tax system. “Before GST, multiple taxes were levied, and moving goods from one state to another was cumbersome. Companies faced challenges due to taxes and tolls, and the burden ultimately fell on consumers. With GST, we have simplified the system and promoted FDI,” Modi noted.

Highlighting further reforms, he said, “Since winning in 2024, we prioritized GST. We consulted all sections of society and realized the dream of One Nation–One Tax. The new GST makes essential items cheaper, reduces taxes on several products, and removes income tax for earnings up to Rs 12 lakh. This will bring significant relief to the middle class. Items like TVs, fridges, scooters, and house construction will become more affordable. GST reforms are transforming every sector of the economy.”
Modi also promoted the use of domestic products under the slogan Naagrikta Devobhava, stating, “We have reduced 99 percent of goods to a 5 percent tax slab. Small industries have become the guiding force of India’s economy. We should encourage domestic products and take pride in buying what is made in India.”
