Pentagon Warns Drones Reshaping Modern Warfare

The United States Department of Defense has warned that the nature of modern warfare has undergone a dramatic transformation, with low-cost, mass-produced drones emerging as a decisive force on the battlefield. The Pentagon emphasized that lessons must be drawn from the ongoing Ukraine war and recent conflicts involving Iran. Senior defence officials told US lawmakers that Washington must reduce its dependence on China and rapidly strengthen its domestic drone manufacturing industry while equipping the armed forces with large numbers of unmanned systems.

Pentagon officials made these observations while testifying before the US Senate Armed Services Committee. Owen West, a senior adviser at the Pentagon, described drones as the most significant innovation in warfare in several generations. He said the US has identified three key priorities to strengthen its drone capabilities: expanding domestic manufacturing, supplying and training military forces with advanced drone systems, and maintaining technological superiority over rivals.

During the hearing, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker expressed concern that the United States has fallen behind in the global drone market. He noted that China has captured more than 90 percent of the global non-military drone market through massive subsidies and strategic pricing policies worth tens of billions of dollars. As a result, American drones are currently five to twenty-five times more expensive than Chinese models.

Senator Jack Reed also highlighted the growing impact of drones in modern conflicts, noting that more than half of battlefield deaths in recent wars have been caused by drone attacks. The rising role of unmanned systems has significantly altered military tactics, forcing defence planners to rethink traditional approaches to warfare.

In response, the Pentagon has launched a new initiative called the “Drone Dominance” programme. Program manager Travis Metz said the US plans to allocate $1.1 billion over the next 18 months for drone procurement. Following a competition involving 25 companies, contracts will be awarded for the production of 30,000 one-way attack drones, which are expected to be delivered to military units within the next five months. Officials added that while current US drones cost around $5,000 each, the goal is to reduce the price to below $2,000 as production scales up.
