New Delhi: The use of Social Media has surged dramatically in recent times, with people increasingly relying on these platforms for information and a growing number of content creators emerging daily. Notably, many are now using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to produce digital content. Against this backdrop, a parliamentary panel has recommended that creators using AI must obtain licenses before publishing content, making permissions mandatory for AI-generated videos and posts.
According to reports, the proposal was introduced to counter the widespread circulation of fake news on social media. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, chaired by Nishikant Dubey of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), submitted the report, stating that the move would enable swift legal action against individuals and organizations spreading misinformation. The committee had earlier presented its draft report to Om Birla, the Lok Sabha Speaker, and it is expected to be tabled in the upcoming Parliament session. The panel also stressed the need for strong coordination between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, other ministries, and various departments to implement the recommendations effectively.
The committee further highlighted the growing threat of Deepfake technology, which has recently sparked outrage after obscene videos were created using celebrities’ faces. In response, the IT Ministry has set up a nine-member committee to study the issue and launched two projects aimed at detecting deepfake speeches, videos, and voices. The panel warned that fake news has now become a serious threat to democracy.
