The Modi government is set to introduce the One Nation, One Election Bill during the ongoing Parliament sessions. In a significant move, the Union Cabinet granted its approval for simultaneous elections, commonly referred to as Jamili elections on Thursday. Reports indicate that the bill may be tabled later this week.

To ensure smooth passage, the BJP has issued a whip directing its MPs to attend the sessions on December 13 and 14. This development adds weight to the possibility of the bill’s introduction and subsequent debate.

Cabinet’s Earlier Endorsement
The Cabinet had previously approved the recommendations of the Ram Nath Kovind Committee regarding Jamili elections. This renewed approval during the ongoing sessions highlights the government’s determination to implement the policy. If passed, the bill would pave the way for conducting Lok Sabha, state assembly, and local body elections simultaneously.

Diverse Reactions from Political Parties
The proposal has drawn mixed reactions from various political circles. Opposition parties claim the move would disproportionately benefit the ruling party at the Centre, potentially sidelining regional parties. On the other hand, over 30 political parties have expressed support for the initiative. However, 15 parties, including the Congress, have opposed the bill, questioning its feasibility.

The Congress has emphasized that elections should be held as needed to uphold democratic values, arguing that the One Nation, One Election framework is impractical.

Government’s Efforts to Build Consensus
In light of the differing viewpoints, the government is reportedly considering referring the bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further deliberation. Comprehensive consultations with representatives from various political parties and stakeholders are also being planned.

Constitutional Amendments Required
To implement One Nation, One Election, several constitutional provisions would require amendments. With Parliament now at the center of this debate, the key question is whether the bill will gain approval or face significant resistance.

This proposed legislation, if enacted, would mark a transformative shift in the country’s electoral process, making its progress in Parliament a matter of national significance.
