The emergence of the XFG COVID-19 variant, also known as Stratus, has raised alarms worldwide. First identified in Southeast Asia in January 2025, the variant has now spread to at least 38 countries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Health experts are urging India and other nations to remain vigilant as case numbers continue to rise.
Stratus is spreading rapidly and presenting symptoms similar to the previous Nimbus variant, including shortness of breath, chest tightness, sore throat, headache, body aches, abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhea, mental fatigue, loss of focus, and loss of taste or smell. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported sudden increases in cases in nine states, including New York, New Jersey, and Michigan.
Medical professionals recommend antiviral treatment under supervision for those infected. Mild symptoms may be managed with home remedies such as warm fluids, steam inhalation, and turmeric milk, while standard medications can be used for fever and pain under doctor guidance. Maintaining adequate rest, a balanced diet, and strong immunity is advised.
Experts stress that, given the virus’s continued mutations, preventive measures remain crucial. Wearing masks, frequent handwashing, balanced nutrition, and regular health check-ups are recommended as the most effective strategies to curb the spread of the Stratus variant.
