A new twist has emerged in the Karimnagar Corporation mayoral election, delivering a setback to the BJP Party, which had aimed to secure the post. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s intervention reshaped the political calculations in the city. Out of 66 divisions, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 30 seats, followed by Congress with 14, BRS with 9, independents with 8, MIM with 3, and AIFB with 2. With two corporators joining the BJP on Friday night and another two on Saturday morning, and local MP Bandi Sanjay casting his ex-officio vote, the BJP’s strength rose to 35. The newly elected corporators were later moved to Sanjay’s Hyderabad camp.
At the same time, Congress initiated a parallel political strategy to secure the mayoral post. Assembly constituency in-charge Velichala Rajendra Rao treated the 2026 municipal elections as a prestige battle, bringing all 14 Congress corporators to their camp. Discussions with independent leader Sougani Komurayya were successful, ensuring additional support for the party.
BRS corporators who won 9 seats were brought under the supervision of MLA Gangula Kamalakar, who clarified that the party would support whichever leader is allotted the mayoral post. This alignment effectively blocked BJP’s path to the mayoralty, as key leaders reached a mutual understanding ahead of the final decision.
The entire matter was escalated to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who is closely monitoring the developments. CM’s personal advisor Vem Narendra Reddy, along with joint district ministers Ponnam, Sridhar Babu, and Lakshman, are supervising the situation firsthand to manage the evolving political dynamics in Karimnagar.
