Trivikram Srinivas’s cult classic Athadu, starring Mahesh Babu, is set for a grand re-release on August 9, 2025, coinciding with the actor’s birthday. Originally released on August 10, 2005, the film was a massive success and continues to enjoy a strong fan following.
Producers Duggirala Kishore, M. Rammohan, and Murali Mohan, under the Jayabheri Arts banner, are bringing the film back to theatres in upgraded formats including 4K, IMAX, Dolby, and Super 4K, along with the original soundtrack technology for an enhanced viewing experience.
Speaking at a press meet in Hyderabad on Saturday, producer Murali Mohan revealed that the role of Satyanarayana Murthy, played by Nassar, was initially offered to veteran actor Sobhan Babu. A blank cheque was sent to his manager along with a request to take up the role, but Sobhan Babu declined. “He told us he wished to be remembered only as a hero and was not interested in playing father or grandfather roles,” said Murali Mohan.
Sobhan Babu officially retired from films in 1996, with his last release being Balarama Krishnulu in 1992. Post-retirement, he focused on his personal life and real estate business before passing away in 2008.
Athadu was one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of 2005 and earned three Nandi Awards, as well as the Filmfare Award for Best Director for Trivikram Srinivas. It has since achieved cult status, with over 1,500 television broadcasts and consistently high TRP ratings, making it one of the most-watched films in Telugu television history.
