New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday denied media reports claiming that the death sentence of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya in Yemen had been revoked. Official sources clarified that no such communication has been received from Yemeni authorities and termed the information circulating as baseless.
On Monday night, the office of India’s Grand Mufti, Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar, announced that Yemeni officials had agreed to cancel the execution following mediation efforts by Yemeni Sufi scholar Sheikh Habib Omar bin Hafiz. However, MEA stated that these reports are inaccurate. Priya, convicted in the murder of a Yemeni national, was scheduled for execution on July 16, but Yemeni authorities postponed it to allow negotiations with the victim’s family over blood money. The family has so far refused any compensation, leaving the case unresolved.
