Fresh security concerns emerged near the White House, the official residence of the U.S. President, after a shooting incident took place close to a Secret Service checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. According to officials, an armed suspect approached the checkpoint and suddenly opened fire on security personnel, triggering panic and a massive security response in the area.

Authorities stated that the suspect allegedly fired nearly 20 rounds at Secret Service officers. Security personnel immediately retaliated with counterfire, leading to a tense standoff near the White House complex. Following the incident, law enforcement agencies rushed additional forces to the area and tightened security measures across the surrounding zone.

Reports indicated that U.S. President Donald Trump was inside the White House when the gunfire erupted. Journalists present on the premises were swiftly directed to move into the press briefing room for safety after the sound of shots was heard. Despite the incident, President Trump later attended and addressed an event held in the East Room of the White House. FBI Director Kash Patel later confirmed through social media platform X that the President was safe and faced no direct threat.

The suspect, who sustained critical injuries during the exchange of fire with Secret Service personnel, was shifted to a nearby hospital where he was later declared dead, according to preliminary information released by officials. Investigators identified the accused as a white male from Maryland and are probing whether he had earlier attempted to approach the White House entrance on Monday. Officials also confirmed that a minor boy suffered minor injuries in the firing and was hospitalized, though his condition remains stable.

The latest shooting has raised fresh concerns over security around the White House, marking the second such alarming incident in recent weeks. The development comes less than two weeks after gunfire was reported near the hotel hosting the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Adding to the seriousness of the episode, USSS Deputy Director Matt Quinn revealed during a media briefing that U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s convoy had passed through the same area just minutes before the shooting occurred.
