Prayagraj: The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh has seen millions of devotees, including several BJP leaders, taking part in holy dips in the Ganga River. However, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has strongly criticized the event, questioning its significance for addressing the country’s pressing issues.

Speaking at the ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ event in Madhya Pradesh on Monday, Kharge remarked, “Does immersing in the Ganga remove poverty from the country? Does it fill the stomachs of those suffering from hunger?” He further criticized the practice of bathing at the Kumbh Mela, asserting that it does not lead to liberation. Kharge accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of committing unforgivable sins, claiming that they would face the consequences.

Kharge expressed concern about the real issues affecting the people, such as child hunger, education, and unpaid wages for workers, which BJP leaders, according to him, were ignoring while focusing on publicity at the Kumbh Mela. “The people perform daily prayers in their homes without any issues. But under the guise of religion, the poor are being exploited,” he added.

In response, BJP MP Sambit Patra hit back, accusing the Congress party of attacking the faith of millions of Hindus. He questioned whether Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi would make similar remarks about the faith of other religions.
