Bihar politics is witnessing a significant change as long-serving Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announces his entry into national politics. Kumar has officially declared his intention to contest the Rajya Sabha elections, fueling speculation that he may resign from the Chief Minister post around April 9. With Nitish Kumar stepping aside, the BJP is set to play a decisive role in choosing Bihar’s next Chief Minister. Three leaders have emerged as frontrunners: Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary, a trusted aide of the Modi-Shah leadership from the Kushwaha community; Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, representing the Yadav community; and Janak Ram, a Dalit leader considered for SC representation balance. Other names, including Vijay Kumar Sinha and Nitish Mishra, are also being discussed.
Meanwhile, the JDU is initiating succession planning. Nitish Kumar reportedly intends to position his son, Nishant Kumar, in the legislative council with the long-term plan of handing over party leadership. The new government could implement a formula allowing two Deputy Chief Ministers from the JDU quota.
The political shift has elicited reactions from opposition leaders. RJD chief Tejashwi Yadav accused the BJP of weakening the JDU by influencing Nitish Kumar’s decision, while Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the move as undermining the people’s mandate. Despite the official nomination process being underway, the identity of Bihar’s next Chief Minister remains uncertain, and political analysts are closely monitoring the potential impact on both state and national politics.
