A viral video featuring fugitive businessmen Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya, reportedly shot in London during Mallya’s recent birthday celebrations, has triggered widespread outrage in India. Both men are accused of major financial irregularities and are alleged to have caused significant losses to Indian banks before leaving the country. The video, which circulated widely on social media, shows Lalit Modi making remarks that appeared to mock Indian authorities, drawing sharp criticism from the public.
The comments in the video, in which Lalit Modi allegedly referred to himself and Vijay Mallya as among India’s biggest absconding offenders, sparked intense backlash online. Many social media users accused the duo of showing blatant disregard for Indian law while continuing to live abroad despite facing serious charges at home. The visuals further fuelled anger over their repeated public appearances outside India.
In response to the backlash, Lalit Modi deleted the video and issued a public apology. He claimed his remarks were misunderstood and said he did not intend to hurt public sentiment or show disrespect towards the Government of India. However, the apology has done little to calm public anger, with growing demands for accountability and renewed questions over the government’s failure to secure the extradition of high-profile economic offenders.
Reacting to the controversy, the Indian government reiterated that no fugitive would be spared and that action would be taken strictly in accordance with the law. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India remains fully committed to bringing back all individuals who have fled the country to evade legal proceedings. He added that discussions with several countries are ongoing and that legal and diplomatic processes related to extradition are underway, while acknowledging the complexities involved in cases of economic offences.
