Kolkata: The murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata has ignited widespread concern and debate regarding the safety of medical staff across India. In response to this incident, the central government has issued critical directives to hospital managements.
The government has mandated that hospitals must file an FIR (First Information Report) in the event of any attack or violent incident involving medical personnel. Failure to comply will result in hospital management being held accountable.
Additionally, the central government has outlined five key demands to address the issue:
- Enhance the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897: Strengthen this legislation to better protect doctors and hospitals from attacks.
- Implement Robust Security Protocols: Hospitals should adopt security measures comparable to those at airports, including improved CCTV surveillance, increased security personnel, and designation as security zones.
- Ensure Adequate Rest for Medical Staff: The continuous 36-hour shift of the murdered trainee doctor without sufficient rest facilities has been identified as a contributing factor. Future arrangements should ensure proper rest periods for medical staff.
- Conduct Thorough Investigations: Ensure detailed investigations into such crimes, with prompt and stringent penalties for those responsible.
- Provide Appropriate Compensation: Offer suitable compensation to the affected family of the victim.
